Let’s talk trust. Have you ever lost trust in someone? Has someone ever lost trust in you? It can be painful, and it can happen both at work and in your personal life.

Trust creates vulnerability, which oftentimes leads to creating a boundary to protect yourself. And trust also takes time, oh my gosh – so much time – to fill that broken void.

When you understand how trust is built, and how it is lost, you can begin to better understand what role you play in ensuring there is clear communication, proper expectation setting, and when needed, clarity and conciseness.

My takeaways from the book:

  1. The 4 domains of trust are: care, sincerity, reliability, and competence.
  2. There is a cycle of a promise: request/offer, fulfillment, declaration of completion, terms of satisfaction
  3. When you tell someone that you’ve delivered on your commitment, it builds trust. To take it a step further, you can ask for their satisfaction level to show you’re dedicated to their desired outcome.
  4. There are 7 steps to follow before discussing a trust issue. The major takeaway here is to really think through what bothers you and the outcome you desire.

Which really got me thinking…

Why has it taken me so long to read personal development books? They impact the leader I am every day just as much as they affect how I participate in my own personal relationships.

What’s a relationship in your life where trust is fragile?

How does that make you feel?

What would it take to rebuild that trust?

Who should read this book:

  • Business leaders/managers
  • Moms and Dads (because all of this can easily be applied at home)
  • Humans who care about having healthy relationships

In summary:

I took the learnings of this book and have weaved it into a public workshop that I do, surrounding effective communication. As a team, you must understand this cycle. As a leader, it’s imperative you understand the nuances of how your organization is cultivating (or lack thereof) trust. As a human, you’ll succeed in relationships when you better understand the impact you make to the trust piece of the experience.

Let’s chat if you feel like trust could be strengthened in your organization or relationships.

With empathy and non-judgement,

Coach B
