The Unshakable You: How to Show Up When Everything Feels Shaky

Let’s be honest: in a world obsessed with “hustle” and high performance, most people are quietly drowning in their own reactions.

They know what to do – build the business, lead the meeting, respond to the customer’s complaint, but how they show up? That part gets left behind.

In my session “The Unshakable You,” I unpack the secret sauce that separates leaders who crumble under pressure from those who lead with impact and heart:

It’s not talent.
It’s not confidence.
It’s emotional intelligence. And it starts in your body.

Why You're Not Broken. You're Just Wired That Way

Here’s something nobody teaches you in business school: your body is talking before your mouth ever opens. And it’s usually yelling.

Your nervous system is like your backstage crew — quietly running the show, reacting to stress, scanning for threats, and replaying old stories from your past. Every conversation, every tough moment, every “what the hell just happened?” moment… yep, your body logged it, stored it, and hit save.

So when something triggers you at work, whether it’s their tone, that email, that eye-roll in the meeting, your body doesn’t ask for permission. It just reacts.

And your brain? She’s the narrator, trying to make sense of it all. Usually by pulling up a memory file from ten years ago that feels familiar but might not actually help.

Your Posture Is Speaking. Is It Saying What You Want?

You can’t fake presence. People feel your energy before you speak.

A stressed-out leader doesn’t need to say a word. It’s in the tight shoulders, the clipped tone, the darting eyes. A grounded, emotionally present leader? You feel that energy, too –  calm, clear, open.

Your emotions have shape. Think about it:

  • Frustrated? Jaws clench, fists tighten.
  • Embarrassed? Shoulders cave, cheeks burn.
  • At ease? Breathing slows, posture opens.

This is especially true in people-driven industries like hospitality, property management, or customer service where your presence is the product. And it matters more than you think.

Try This: The React vs. Respond Reset

Here’s one of my favorite reflection tools I use with clients – no journal required, just a moment of honesty.

Step 1: Recall a time you reacted.
You snapped. Froze. Spiraled.
What did your body do? Were your shoulders hunched? Breath shallow? Jaw locked?

Step 2: Now re-run that scene but… responding instead.
You’re calm. Aware. Curious. You pause before speaking. Your voice is steady, not sharp.

That difference? That’s your growth edge.
The more you rehearse the regulated version, the easier it gets to find her in real life. Emotional regulation is a practiced skill, not a personality trait.

Here’s the Science (Because You Know I Love a Good Brain Moment)

Every time you respond differently — even just in your imagination — you start rewiring your nervous system. Yes, really.

That’s called neuroplasticity, and it means your “default” settings can change. Your body learns new ways to feel safe, grounded, and empowered in the moments that used to throw you sideways. That’s what makes you unshakable.

Let’s Get Practical: What To Do When You Feel Triggered

Try this next time your heart races and your palms sweat:

  • Scan your body. Where are you holding tension? What just tightened?
  • Breathe slower. Yes, it feels basic. But breath is your brake pedal.
  • Choose curiosity. Instead of “What’s wrong with them?” try “What might be going on here?”
  • Own your energy. You don’t have to absorb what’s not yours.

You can’t always control what walks into the room, but you can control how you stand in it.

Final Thought: You’re Not Just the Leader. You’re the Climate

Whether you’re leading a team of 2 or 200, your presence sets the tone. And if you’re tired of reacting in ways that don’t reflect who you really are, know this: You don’t have to “try harder.” You just have to listen differently. Your body is already sending you the memo.
